BEES ARE BRILLIANT

Okay, so the quote is waaaay outta touch with modern science but I still like it! I’ve BEEn interested in the wee BUZZards since I found out how unbelievably skilled and efficient they were in geometry. (I dig math, okay?!)

FACTS TO GET YOUR HEAD BUZZING ‘BOUT BEES…

~Bees do not see the color red but they can see ultraviolet colors

~~A queen bee chooses the sex of her offspring

~~~Honey bees are not born to make honey: they are taught by their elders
~~~~Been around for 30 million years

~~~~~A honeycomb is made of hexagonal cells with walls that are only 2/1000 inch thick, but support 25 times their own weight
~~~~~~Bees pollinate an average of 15 billion dollars in crops every year

~~~~~~~Bees dance to communicate
~~~~~~~~Bees are super-smart at math and can calculate angles

~~~~~~~~~The hexagonal honeycomb shape is a reflection of this ability, as it is the most efficient use of space for them to store food
~~~~~~~~~~Honey is the only food made by insects that is eaten by man

~~~~~~~~~~~Honey has everything in it to sustain life, with an added antioxidant that promotes brain functioning
~~~~~~~~~~~~Human brains have trillions of glial “glue” cells that form a honeycomb pattern that nourishes and protects neurons

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

In honor of All Saints Day, I am showing gratitude to my Catholic heritage by sharing with you one of my favorite saints, Saint Kateri Tekawitha, who was just recently canonized (fancy word meaning the big wigs in the church feel she is worthy of being called a saint) on 10/21/2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. Kateri is the first Native American Indian to reach sainthood; she showed extreme courage and bravery in what she believed and gave great dedication to the environment and the sick. Her story has fascinated me, since I was a young girl.

My mom, grandma, and I went into Saint Louis city to visit my Uncle Jim , who was in the Kenrick seminary (fancy word for a college where you learn to become a priest). While we were in the gift shop, I spotted the book, Kateri Tekawitha, Lily of the Mohawks. My grandma bought it for me and I read it all the time. I think I even brought it to school for show-and-tell!

Hearing the news of Kateri’s sainthood, this October, put a huge smile on my face. It brought back a flood of memories of my grandma , who is now gone and my uncle, who recently passed away in September. As I grew older, and more rebellious of my Catholic upbringing, I often debated with them on the teaching and dogma of the church. It drove my mother CRAZY! I’m sure they are giggling, as I write this…

I am beginning to accept that in my questioning of my beliefs I do not have to completely shun and rebel from them, either. Although I am, currently, not a devoted Catholic, I find that my faith is still heavily rooted in Catholic teachings and prayers: I love reading about saints and angels, I still pray numerous Catholic prayers, almost daily, and when I do go to church, I get overwhelmingly emotional and almost always have tears. It is a part of me. It seems as though I cannot escape it, no matter how hard I try to run away…

Be Strong. Be Courageous.

KINDNESS COUNTDOWN

Kindness

Upon completion of my last Probability and Statistics test, with my brain nearly fried, I cruised over to Facebook-land for some much-needed, non-thinking activity. A HUGE smile crept up on my face, as I read on of my friend’s posts. She is at the closing of her time in her 30′s and had written a “TO DO” list of items to accomplish before she hit the debilitating age of 40 ;)

She stated that she realized she would most likely never complete many of the items before her birthday, so she gave her list a new direction. Instead of trying to accomplish pie-in-the-sky, self-absorbed goals at this time, she is choosing to do 40 random acts of kindness before she blows out her candles on the eve of her birthday next month!!!

She started her KINDNESS COUNTDOWN today in the drive-thru at Starbucks, by buying the lady’s coffee behind her~ I just imagined how shocked and appreciative the unsuspecting recipient of the “FREE” coffee must have been. Ya, I teared-up a bit, I’ll admit…Kindness just warms the hell outta my heart ( It’s my Cancer Moon for any astrology nerds out there).

I love how my friend flipped her “ME ME ME LIST” into something that everyone can benefit from and my thoughts began to wonder~~ I wonder what other random acts she has in store? I wonder how many people her kindness is going to spread to? and how many of those people will continue to spread the kindness they received? Will they show gratitude? Will they shrug it off?

I WONDER!!

<3 and Kindness,

Abby Rae

Make Much of Your Time

Gather ye rosebuds, 2009 from Jinyoung,Choi on Vimeo.

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

By Robert Herrick

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
 Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
 Tomorrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
 The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
 And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
 When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
 Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
 And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
 You may forever tarry.

Make MUCH of YOUR Time~

The Game of Life and How to Play It

I just started reading this book and find it fascinating. I was raised Catholic but learned to despise the dogma of conformed religion. Please do not get me wrong, I have an imense gratitude of my upbringing but my spirit always guided me to know and learn more. Florence Scovel Shinn uses words of the Spripture in the way I feel and believe them to have been used. The ebook is available for free distribution~ Why? because it was written in the 20′s! ! and copyright law alows it ;)

I hope you enjoy it and pass it along!
